1996 – Altavista

Ten years ago the search of choice was Altavista. It was unlike the yucky sucky portal directory offerings like Yahoo. No more going through arbitrarily named directory structures, where the choice of words clearly indicates the choosers are middle-aged (in 1996 that was everyone over 24) and American. No, AltaVista had the power of finding anything on the net, for their innovation of devising a way to store every word of every HTML page on the Internet in a fast, searchable index. Yes, AltaVista attributes that to themselves.

2006 – Google

And so was the world, until of course Google came around, re-invented the game and in the distress of heating competition Altavista became a sucky portal.
